NFL Program Takes On Fatherhood

Urban Light Ministries is kicking off another NFL season – the Nurturing Fathers for Life class.

These classes are for any Clark County father, father-to-be or father figure who desires to be the best father he can be. The program’s goal is to teach fathering styles, effective communication skills and relational conflict resolution to dads from all walks of life.

The NFL’s 13-week course, which started on September 26, is completely free. The program includes dinner every week, a free accompanying workbook and the opportunity to form a brotherhood with other men who are gaining new perspectives on fatherhood.

The class sessions are held at Urban Light Ministries, 515 S. Yellow Springs Street, in Springfield.

Eli Williams, president and CEO of Urban Light Ministries in Springfield, Ohio, started the NFL program in October of 2006. Through partnerships with Clark County Job & Family Services and other local organizations, the program has lasted 5 years.

Williams told Clark County Job & Family Services, “We are continuing to offer this program because we believe in the tremendous difference fathers can make in their children’s lives. As a longtime Springfield resident, community member and minister, I can attest firsthand to the need in our city for dedicated dads to father their children in a way that will foster their growth and maturity.”

The National Fatherhood Initiative released a survey in 2011 which found that Springfield has a 40% rate of absent fathers, which is significantly higher than the national average of 33%.
