Challenge Camp - A week-long adventure for close to 100 children

A hundred smiles lit up Camp Birch the week of July 28 as Clark County kids paddled, swam and climbed their way through Challenge Camp. Through a partnership with Boy Scouts of America, Family and Children Services employees helped operate a week-long adventure for close to 100 children, many of whom were experiencing camp for the first time.

Staff watched as leaders emerged within groups and friendships were made among campers. Many children tried things they had never attempted before, like the 35 foot climbing wall or jumping out of a boat to swim in the lake. One child, returning for her second year, was eager to show that she could sit on the bottom of the shallow end of the pool, when, on her first day last year, she was terrified of even putting her face in the water. Teamwork was learned as the children worked the low rope courses, played trust games and completed an obstacle course together. During the closing campfire, campers and staff joined in songs, skits, a “dance-off” and many children asked when they could return.

A big “Thank You” goes to staff members who gave their time and energy (lots of energy!) during the week. Without Brooke Williams, Kim Lee, Nikki Berry, Dawn Mast, Mandy Ray, Shelby Steinmetz, Jerome Kynard and Monique Timmons, this wonderful week would not have been possible. Also, thank you to all staff who referred a child to be part of this experience.
