Building a Foundation for the Future

Damon Benton and Jazman Powell have benefited in several ways from Job and Family Services of Clark County (JFSCC). Most significant is their strengthened relationship, gained from the Parents as Partners program of Child Support Services of Clark County, a division of JFSCC.

"That taught us a lot," Benton said of the free, voluntary program that helps mothers and fathers build healthy relationships and provide their children with a more stable, nurturing home environment.

"Before we entered the program we were not getting along that well," Benton explained. "We weren't agreeing on anything, like how to solve our problems. They taught us not to argue in front of the kids. And they taught us how to work at solving a lot of things, financial and relationship wise."

Benton and Powell have two daughters, 4 months and 2 years old.

Powell said, "It's been great. We're having better conversations, and we're communicating a lot better."

Presently, Benton is studying to earn the GED high school equivalency credential through WorkPlus, another division of JFSCC. He recently scored well on a practice GED test, a sign that he is nearly prepared to take the actual test and improve his prospects in today's tightening job market. "Once I earn my GED, I plan to enroll in the WorkPlus Job Readiness program," Benton said. WorkPlus staff will help him prepare his resume, work skills and assist him with his search for a job. After he finds employment he'd like to attend college.

The family also has received assistance through JFSCC's BenefitsPlus program, which provides temporary benefits designed to help families get back on their feet. They qualified for food and cash assistance when Benton's work assignment through a temporary employment agency ended.

They also received support through the Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC) program to pay the security deposit on their house. And they are awaiting a decision on their application to receive day care assistance for their daughters.
