Making Life Better for Their Family Through Kinship Care

When it becomes necessary for Family and Children Services of Clark County to remove children from their homes, social workers attempt to locate a relative or friend willing to take the children into their home while the parents work with the agency to reunify with the children. This is called Kinship Care.

Recently, Family and Children Services of Clark County became involved with a family that benefited from the Kinship Care program. Lanna had become depressed after the loss of her husband and was abusing prescription drugs as a way of coping with her loss. When neglect issues surfaced and she was no longer able to care for her son, the agency stepped-in.

Peggy, a cousin to Justin’s father, was granted temporary custody of Justin. She became a strong support person for both Lanna and the boy. As kinship care providers, Peggy and her husband provided a stable and secure home for Justin while Lanna successfully completed a drug treatment program.

Lanna continues to improve and is currently working with Mental Health Services. Lanna and Justin have weekly visitation at the Gibault Visitation Center. Lanna also has benefited from the services of a Parent Aid Coach. In the mean time, Justin looks forward to reunifying with his mother when the time is right.
