Interstate Actions

Frequently Asked Questions

Interstate actions occur when a parent obligated to pay child support lives in one state while the custodial parent and child live in another state.  The CSEA will utilize another state’s child support agency to establish, enforce or modify an existing child support order.  The interstate actions operate under the authority of the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA).

Federal law mandates all states adopt uniform rules.  Child support agencies across the nation use a structured set of rules to make determinations on which state has jurisdiction.

For more specific information, please contact your local county CSEA or the state/county that issued your support order.
